Cristiano Ronaldo Declines to Talk About Retirement from Portugal Post World Cup Loss

Another big team in the World Cup, Portugal has shocked people at the international stage with a 2-1 loss against Uruguay yesterday, July 1, 2018. Portugal’s reining man of the field and Balon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo joins Argentina’s star Lionel Messi in losing their chance of winning the World Cup as both teams have been eliminated.

The 33-year-old Real Madrid forward has not given any direct statements or hints regarding the next steps of his career. Retirement from the Portugal team was something the football star did not want to discuss or comment on.

“It’s not the right time to talk about my future, or about the coach or any of the players. I’m absolutely sure this team will continue to be one of the best in the world. We have a team of players who are ambitious. Portugal are going to carry on winning things and making the people of Portugal proud.”

Fernando Santos, the coach of Portugal is quite resolute regarding his team captain’s availability for selection in the next World Cup, Santos says he is positive Ronaldo will be open to the opportunity to give his time for Portugal and football in general.

“We start the next tournament in September and we hope he will be with us to help the young one grow. It’s important to have a captain there and he’s always there for us.” Santos adds.

Uruguay will be playing against France in the quarter-final to be held in Nizhny Novgorod on Friday, July 6.
