With COVID-19 slowing the football industry and several other sporting events and tournaments on hold or postponed, it’s inevitable that the UEAFA President, Aleksander Cefarin tells people to prepare for the eventual suspension of Champions League and Europa League. If the global pandemic continues to worsen in the next few months, restrictions and cancelations will remain until September.
The Daily Mail reports that European football club competitions are indefinitely postponed with the cancelations and no proposed dates for the finals. However, Cefarin is not closed off to the idea of empty stadiums with players still in action on the field, however, even with such plausible ideas in hand, there’s still no cut-off date and admits in a statement that not much certainty is guaranteed from what he knows.
“The fact is that we really don’t know much,’ the president of European football’s governing body said. We are waiting for the development of this terrible situation in the world, and mainly in Europe. Football isn’t the same without fans. But it is definitely better to play with fans than without fans.” Cerafin says.
With more cancelations coming up, the president of UEFA shares his honest opinion of the football industry rapidly changing overnight due to COVID-19.
“But it is still better to play the game behind closed doors and have it on TV, which is what the people need and want because it brings positive energy to their homes than not playing at all. That’s what the people want, that brings positive energy, and it will be July or August. We can’t play it out in September or October.” Cerafin adds.
